Great info Cam. I want to be a successful business man. Starting with screen printing because it's a passion for me, should make things easier. And you're right about the loan part. Got a loan when I started my t-shirt brand, bad idea. But this time, didn't take out no loan for my print shop. Best decision, no worries about having to have to pay loan payments.

As a retired Industrial Architect, couldn't agree more.

Started my own handy man business in '92 straight out of Service with just a pair of worn Wellcos, Army FOB experience and a toolbox full of my grandfather's old tools. Began with doing odd jobs with a local Flexographic Electrician and a Sheetmetal Fabricator pulling wire, hanging ductwork and grinding rust off old equipment. With this and a Chap 30, afforded me the opportunity to go through six years of Engineering school, earning a double MSE in Industrial Structural Eng and Architecture. Shortly after post grad, using the experience and connections acquired working with Industrial Contractors, rented a tiny 700 sq ft shop and opened an industrial architectural design and drafting firm; engineering and drafting equipment tower/crane shop drawings, high tension electrical blueprints and schematics. Eventually, specializing in LEAN Manufacturing, Large Distribution Warehouse and Nuclear Plant site layouts.

Sold the Firm in 2014 with 115 employees and lease out each of my three 80-100k sq ft in-house designed warehouses to the new Firm owners, a tire manufacturer and a food container manufacturer. Now, living the retired life as a landlord with two of my kids going to my Alma Mater for Architecture and another starting an apparel and textile printing company… Hence, coming across this very insightful video.

    Great content, Cam
I'm kinda upset with my day job and about to quit, but you're right, I should have a strong foot on my printing shop first.

Build a website and utilize the untapped power of subcontracting to get started with little to no early investment in equipment.

100% accurate, I'm going through the same thing right now. Started printing and selling my designs at shows/farmers markets. Saw potential. Quit my crappy 40k/year job. And now am doing about 12+k a month. It's scary getting away from a steady paycheck. But you'll be upset you didn't start sooner. Keep grinding everyone!
